Intraocular lens

This surgical technique is the same as the one used for cataract surgery. However, other exams must be completed for the calculation of the lens.

When hyperopia is severe or if we notice that the natural lens is starting to get cloudy and that the patient is over 45 years old, we remove the natural lens of the eye and replace it by a permanent intraocular lens (IOL).

The technique consists in making a small incision at the junction of the sclera (white part of the eye) and the cornea (clear anterior part). The natural lens is then fragmented and sucked piece by piece through a canula. A monofocal lens could be inserted to correct one distance.  We can also implant a multifocal lens to correct near, intermediate and distance vision.

We operate both eyes at the same time.  Vision generally improves quickly but a convalescence of 2 weeks is recommended.

If an additional Excimer Laser correction must be performed within the 6 months following the surgery, it is included in the cost of the initial surgery. Should there be some astigmatism, it is corrected at the time of the initial surgery.

The IOL may increase the risk of retinal detachment in myopic patients (1%).

Aspheric monofocal lens : Monofocal lenses have a single focal length and unlike the natural lens do not possess the ability to change the focus. Therefore the patient needs to wear reading glasses in order to focus at near fine print. Aspheric or advanced optic lenses have their curvatures flattening out towards the periphery or edge, thereby, minimizing spherical aberrations.

Toric lens : Toric lenses, besides having spherical power, also have cylindrical power which corrects astigmatism present in the eye.  Toric lenses are especially useful for patients with high degree of astigmatism.

Multifocal lens : The SBL-3 is a premium intraocular lens (IOL) that has the ability to correct presbyopia, enabling you to see things close up. The lens is designed similarly to bifocal glasses, with a section or “zone” that enables distance vision, and a zone that enables near vision. SBL-3’s unique technology allows your eye to adjust naturally between the two zones to give you excellent near, intermediate and distance vision.
